THE Mandurah Triathlon Club 2009 Steve Batty Enduro attracted 42 competitors last weekend and featured an exciting finish.
Shayne Dimmer completed the race in 41min 32.09sec to just edge out last year’s junior and overall winner Troy Main (41.32.93) to take the fiercely contested line honours.
Enduro participants swim, ride and run about half the “standard” triathlon distance, before repeating the process. This format emphasises the importance of being able to transition from one discipline to another as quickly as possible.
The Mandurah club holds this event each year in memory of former club member Steve Batty and an award is given to the first junior male and female to cross the line.
Jannelle Crooks (14) and Blake Lee (13) won the Steve Batty Enduro Junior Awards this year.
Jannelle, with a time of 47.44 was also first female overall. Blake (50.38) beat many seniors .
The race started at 7.30am on Sunday at Doddi’s Beach in superb conditions. After the initial swim around the pontoon and back, the first bike leg along Halls Head Parade began with a following north-easterly breeze.
Sam Stretch again underlined his potential with a creditable third in 42.33.
Juniors Jake Williams (52.34), Daniel Long (53.02) and Mikala Falconer (54.26) also did well.
Recent Ironman WA finishers in the race included Darryl Harris (46.06), Colin Luff (50.09), David Whiteley (51.27), Darren Long (55.20), Sean Canna (58.12) and Kathryn Hookham ( 59.45).
Club stalwarts and 2008 Triathlete of the Year age group winners Ivan and Pauline Wiltshire were inspirational to juniors and seniors alike to finish in 58.23 and 1.06.49 respectively.
