Giant warship drops anchor

MORE than 5000 US sailors with give Perth’s economy a giant boost after the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington and guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens arrived in Fremantle for a five-day visit.

While in Perth sailors from the warships, which are based in Japan, will also take part in community work across the city.

The USS George Washington has about 75 aircraft on board, including F/A 18 Hornets and Sea King helicopters, and has 2ha of flight deck.

The 88,000 tonne warship produces enough water to supply 2000 homes, serves 18,000 meals a day and has 2000 telephones.
