ITALIAN gorgonzola cheese is creating some “intrigue” at Claremont Quarter.

Interest in the imported scooped cheese has continued to build at Deli Divine, according to shop co-owner Yvette Donald.

The deli-styled shop, inside Jack’s fresh food store, forms part of the new market precinct at the centre, which opened late last month.

“It’s a great cheese and is sparking a lot of intrigue because it’s fairly new to Perth and we’re the only deli in Perth stocking it as a full wheel,” Mrs Donald said.

“Gorgonzola also brings back a lot of fond memories for people who have been to Italy.”

Mrs Donald and her husband Michael ran a fresh poultry franchise for more than a decade before opening their first Deli Divine outlet in Subiaco in 2007.

“We just got to the point where we had learnt as much as we could about franchising and wanted to go out on our own, and we have that great love of cheese,” she said.

“It’s ever-changing with new and unique cheeses coming through that you just can’t buy in the supermarket.”

The couple has kept busy, with the new Claremont store opening just a month after the launch of a second shop in Kingsley.

Cheese fans can stock up on 400 different varieties at the Claremont outlet from around Australia and the world, as well as a selection of cold cuts, antipasto and gourmet groceries.

The duo has plans to continue its popular cheese appreciation nights, which they began last year, with another half dozen events lined up for 2010, sharing tips on how to marry cheeses with just the right wine, whiskey or boutique beer.

Another venture the couple also hopes to expand is a Telethon fundraising program where a 50c donation from every lunch roll sold goes to the annual appeal.

The business donated $5000 last year.
