MAYLANDS resident Mat de Koning has been nominated for two WA Screen Awards for his work on a music video and a documentary called Harmony in Halls Creek.

The 26-year-old said it was the first time one of his documentaries had been nominated for a WASA and he was happy to have finally “cracked the category”.

“It’s taken me three years to get a documentary nomination so I’m absolutely stoked,” he said.

“I feel this is my best documentary to date. in the past they either ran too long or were too musically-orientated.

“I studied the elements required for making it audience- friendly and I think I’ve achieved that.

“The documentary explores some really good issues.”

De Koning said he also worked tirelessly to put together his music video Five Beds for Bitsy.

“I’m rapt to get acknowledged – I’ve put a lot of heart and soul into my work, especially into my music videos.”

After an ankle injury from skateboarding in high school, de Koning decided to dedicate most of his time to filmmaking.

“My friends and I were really good skateboarders, so I would go about making skating videos,” he said. “The injury meant I could commit more time towards filming.

“I did most of the principal filming, directing and editing in our videos, and a couple other mates made a soundtrack.”

WASA winners will be announced on Saturday at the Perth Concert Hall.
