COOL hair, a peace-loving attitude and multi-instrumental repertoire - what isn't there to love about Aussie blues and roots journeyman Ash Grunwald?
The dreadlocked one brings his Hot Mama Vibes album tour to Freo's Fly By Night Club on September 17 and Indi Bar, Scarborough on September 19.
Q. The harmonica, stomp box, resonator guitar...any instruments you can't play?
A. Well, I don't actually play harp, but I do play a lot of different guitars and foot percussion and sing through a distorted harp mic.
It all came from playing solo for years and wanting the music to sound as big as possible.
These days, I'm working on weaving more of an electronic element in, but it's a slow process because that stuff is pretty complicated to use when you're already singing, playing guitar and using both feet.
Q. Most inspiring musician on this planet?
A. Hmmmm. The longevity, song-writing and originality of Tom Waits is very inspiring.
Q. Most inspiring location you have performed in?
A. In Cairns a couple of months ago at a bungee jumping site. They created an outdoor stage area out of a natural amphitheatre in a tropical valley.
Q. Can you imagine life without your famed dreadlocks?
A. Not really. I've had them almost all my adult life.
I'm planning to cut them if and when I start to recede, but touch wood, that doesn't seem like it's going to happen.
Q. Name three interests outside of music.
A. I love surfing, hanging with my family, watching good movies and eating good food....oh yeah, and having a few beers.
